For over twenty years, Just Cookies has been servicing satisfied customers at the Indianapolis City Market in Indianapolis, Indiana. They now face eviction due to a business decision. The issue is facing off the moral beliefs and rights of a business owner against the obligation of the city to prevent discrimination. In the politically correct society that has passed stupid and overreaching hate crime tolerance laws, the rights of a person that has invested his time and money to build a business, no longer exist. The City Market is on a city owned property making the city discrimination regulations effective against the Just Cookies business. This issue began when Just Cookies received a call asking them to provide rainbow iced cookies for National Coming Out Day on October 7th at IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis). David Stockton, owner of Just Cookies told the caller he did not feel comfortable preparing a special order for a group that endorsed homosexual activity. Doesn’t he as the owner of the business have the right to decide if he wants to accept an order? Not anymore. The caller was Heather Browning, IUPUI’s coordinator of social justice education in the office of student involvement. Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard (Republican) said the office of Equal Opportunity is looking at the matter due to the fact the building is city owned. Ballard believes a person’s morality and personal beliefs are absolutely not relevant to making a purchase at the City Market. While I would agree with that, I would also say a business owner should be able to make the decision whether to fill a special order. However, let’s hear it for Republican and Democrat alike who would strip a person of their business because of a moral stand. Just Cookies is on a month to month lease and could lose their business location based on this decision. Lily Stockton said that moral issues aside, they will no longer do any special orders because they are too busy. Protests have already been taking place from both sides of the spectrum. It is just sad that in a failing economy, a couple could lose their business due to a decision of what orders they want to fill. Okay, I can hear it, everyone would say what if it was a Christian get together they were refusing to fix cookies for? Well first of all, Ballard and his cronies would not be saying a word if this was Christians instead of homosexuals. Second of all, if Just Cookies didn’t want to make an order for me as a Christian, I would simply go somewhere else. Of course we can’t do that in the politically correct society we live in. I am embarrassed to say I supported Ballard, but I hope he finds himself in the unemployment line along with Mitch Daniels and all of his other so-called Republicans and Democrats like him. I hope you will all pray for the Stocktons as they go through this attack.
